ARGUMENTS Determine whether each sequence is an arithmetic sequence.
Justify your reasoning
1. –3, 1, 5, 9, ...
1) Check the difference between terms.
This sequence has a common difference of 4 between its terms. This is an arithmetic sequence.
Group work :
18. –2, –5, –8, –11, ...
11. 21, 19, 17, 15, ...
19. –3, –8, –13, –18, ...
15 + (–2) = 13
13 + (–2) = 11
11 + (–2) = 9
–11 + (–3) = –14
–14 + (–3) = –17
–17 + (–3) = –20
–18 + (–5) = –23
–23 + (–5) = –28
–28 + (–5) = –33
33. 30, 26, 22, 18, ...
The common difference is –4.
The equation is
an = –4n + 34.
Graph the first five terms.
4-5 Arithmetic Sequences، an
The common difference is –5, so d = –5. The first term is –3, so a1 = –3.
....Continue
The equation is an = –5n + 2.
The 7th term is –33.

MONEY Laniqua opened a savings account to save for a trip to Spain.
With the cost of plane tickets, food, hotel, and other expenses, she
needs to save $1600. She opened the account with $525. Every month,
she adds the same amount to her account using the money she earns
at her after school job. From her bank statement, Laniqua can write a
function that represents the balance of her savings account.
Example 4:
Apply Arithmetic Sequences as Linear Functions
Part A
Create a function to represent the sequence.
First, find the common difference.
The balance after 1 month is $580, so let a1 = 580. Notice that 1
the starting balance is $525. You can think of this starting point as
a = 580. 0
f(n) = a + (n - 1)d Formula for the nth term.
a1 = 580 + (n - 1)(55) a1 = 580 and d = 155
= 580 + 55n – 55 Simplify.
= 55n + 525
Part B
Graph the function and determine its domain.
