محتوى الملف
Module 1: Lesson3: Reproduction and Growth of Animals
Term 3; Week 4
Students will explore how animals engage in characteristic behaviors, which often involve gathering and responding to sensory stimuli, to increase the odds of sexual reproduction and the survival of their young.
Students will also explain how environmental and genetic factors affect the growth of an animal.
Key Vocabulary: Mate, courtship behavior, Pheromones, Innate behavior, Learned behavior
Resources: Inspire Science textbook, Alef, LMS
Multiple Choice Questions Test: Al Asayel School continues assessment Test in Science
Wednesday
Mission: Students will be able to analyze and differentiate between different animal behavior.
Animal communication includes _____. A) courtship behavior B) aggression
C) pheromones D) all the above
Innate behavior increases the survival of young animals because it allows an animal to respond to a stimulus without choosing the proper response.
True False
Which animal behavior attracts mates by competing with members of the same species? A) aggression
B) submission
C) territory D) courtship
4. Female gypsy moths release chemicals called ..................... to attract males.
CHALLENGE QUESTION:
The mating season for white-tailed deer is just two to three months long. Male deer grow antlers before each breeding season. They use their antlers to fight each other to establish dominance in bachelor herds and earn the right to mate with certain females. Scientists claim that this aggressive behavior increases the chances of successful
reproduction for the entire deer population.
Which statement best supports this claim?
A) Healthier male deer can grow larger antlers.
B) Healthier males are better able to protect their young.
C) This behavior extends the length of the mating season.
D) This behavior gives healthier males a better chance to mate.
2. Baby whales are born in water tail first. Immediately afterwards, the mother whale pushes the baby to the surface for its first breath. What kind of behavior is this?
3.Male peacocks display their tails as they strut before females. Classify this behavior. Then, develop an argument that this behavior is related to successful reproduction in this species.
Summary:
How do animals find mates?
A behavior is the way an organism reacts to other organisms or to its environment. Individual animals carry out behaviors.
Types of Behaviors:
Courtship Behaviors: Animals have specialized behaviors that help them find and attract a mate. Animals attract mates by communicating in a variety of ways. These ways include the use of sound, light, chemicals, and body language.
Display Competition Animals often compete with others of the same species for a mate. Some use displays of strength, beauty, or ability. Male peacocks show off their feathers. Male frigate birds inflate their throat sacks.
Physical Competition Other animals compete physically for mates. Male mule deer, for example, become very aggressive towards each other when competing for a mate.
Pheromones, Mating Songs, and Gifts Some animals release chemical substances called pheromones that attract mates. Female gypsy moths do this. Using their sense of smell, many moths and butterflies can detect these pheromones from up to six miles away.
How are young animals protected?
Innate behavior comes from an animal's heredity. An animal's instincts are examples of its innate behavior. For example, migrating birds use innate behavior to know when to begin their migration and the route that they should follow. Learned behavior comes from watching other animals and from life experiences.
Learned behavior is one that an organism develops because of experience. Learned behaviors contrast with innate behaviors, which are genetically hardwired and can be performed without any prior experience or training. Of course, some behaviors have both learned and innate elements.
Protecting Offspring Birds are not the only animals that build nests to protect their young. Some mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles, and insects also build nests. They do this to protect
themselves, their eggs, and their young from predators and the environment. Animals build different types of nests, or dens, from a variety of materials.
