Lesson 4-8، Additional Practice، Name، Review

You can use addition or subtraction to represent a compare problem.

Bernice swims 6 more laps than Susie. Bernice swims 17 laps. How many laps does Susie swim?

17 laps Bernice، Susie

Represent the problem using a bar diagram.

Use mental math or an equation to find the unknown.

Susie swims 11 laps.

1. Which equations can represent the word problem? Choose all the correct answers.

Jamal eats 7 more green beans than Nolan. Jamal eats 14 green beans. How many green beans does Nolan eat?

A. 14 + 7 = ?

B. 14 - ? = 7

C. 7 + ? = 14

D. ? - 7 = 14

2. What equation can represent the problem? Solve and explain how your equation relates to the problem.

Harmen washes 5 fewer dishes than Lori. Lori washes 13 dishes. How many dishes does Harmen wash?

Sample answer: 13 - 5 = ?;

Subtract 5 dishes from Lori’s 13 dishes, so Harmen washes 8 dishes.

3. Write a word problem that could be represented by the bar diagram. Write an equation that represents your problem. Then use your equation to solve the problem.

18 flowers Iris، Nelson

Sample answer: Iris plants 18 flowers. She plants 4 more flowers than Nelson. How many flowers does Nelson plant?; 18 - 4 = ?; 14 flowers

Math، @ Home Activity

Look for comparison situations around your home. Encourage your child to use the situations to practice creating bar diagrams and writing equations to find solutions. For example, if your child reads for 15 minutes, which is 3 more minutes than you read, have your child determine how many minutes you read.
